If all the rain drops where lemon drops and gum drops....

Oh what a rain that would be!

Today we played in the rain :)

...trying to taste the rain

Kirsten doesn't have rainboots so she wore her snow boots to splash in the puddles!

We have been trying to do lots of tummy time with Kara to get her to roll over, but she HATES it! Most of the time she just buries her face in the floor until I give up and roll her over. Today she actually put forth a little effort, and stayed like this for a minute or so. We are getting somewhere :)

Her first taste of baby cereal. Can't you tell she loves it. Bleck!

The 4 month check-up

I took Kara to her 4 month well baby visit this week. Other than the girls having to get shots, I always kinda like these check-ups. The Doctor asks a bunch of questions about how the baby is doing, and I get to be the super proud momma and brag about how wonderful my baby is :)

Kirsten got to come along too. She was excited to help Kara by holding her hand while she got her shots. She was so sweet and concerned for her little sister! It was very cute!

We sang songs, played hide and seek, and ate snacks while waiting for the doctor.

Kara weighed 14.9lbs (66th percentile) and was 25 1/4 inches (78th percentile)

She has been having some trouble with spitting up a lot so the doctor told me to start her on rice cereal to see if that will help with things. I'm tired of changing mine and Kara's clothes because of spit up so I am really hoping this works!

Our 4th, plus a few recipes

We celebrated Independence Day small town style! In the morning we took the girls to watch the parade that Wilmore puts on every year. There are lots of tractors, fire trucks, horses, and a lawn mower brigade! It's a tiny little parade but pratically the entire town comes out to watch, it's a really fun tradition :)

Following the parade we went to the festival where they have horse rides for the kids. Kirsten rode one last year at the festival, but I kind of expected her to be too scared to ride once it was her turn this year. She got right on though and did great!

Her horse was a little chunky :)

We let Kirsten stay up late so I could take her to see the big firework show that takes place just down the road from our house. Since the fireworks didn't start until 10pm, Daddy stayed home with Kara so she could sleep. Here is Kirsten and I watching the fireworks.

We had a great time enjoying all the fun celebrations our little town had to offer!

Now for a few recipes. These are super basic recipes of things I made the this past week that I thought were worth sharing.

Homemade Popsicles

2 cups boiling water
1 packet of jello (any flavor)
1 packet of koolaid
1/2 cup sugar
2 cups cold water

bring 2 cups water to boil, stir in jello, koolaid, and sugar till disolved. Then stir in cold water. Fill popsicle molds, or just use little dixie cups and popsicle sticks. Freeze and enjoy!

Texas-style cheesy potatoes

1 bag Ore-ida southern style hashbrown
1/4 cup melted butter
1 can cream of chicken
12 oz sour cream
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 t seasoned salt
1/4 t black pepper

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl. Pour into greased 13x9 baking dish. Cook for 1 hour.

These are super creamy and yummy! Just don't eat the whole pan : )

Layered Bean Dip

1 can refried beans
1/2 packet of taco seasoning
4 oz sour cream
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 chopped tomato
sliced black olives
1/2 jalapeno (seeded and finely chopped)

(I also like to add a layer of fresh guacamole, but we decided to make this last minute and didn't have any avocados on hand.)

Mix refried beans with 1/2 packet of taco seasoning, spread into bottom of a serving dish. Then spread a layer of sour cream on top of the beans.  Top with cheddar cheese and remaining ingredients. Serve with tortilla chips for dipping.

Are you afraid?

Today at church I dropped Kara off in the nursery for the first time since she was born, and so for the first time in a long time I was able to focus completely on the message and worshipping God. It was wonderful :)

The message this morning was about how we often times live our lives in fear instead of faith. We read about the night that Jesus walked on the water, and how Peter had faith enough to step out of the boat, onto the water in the middle of a storm. (Matt 14:22-33) Because Peter had faith to take that first step out, he was able to experience something that no one else ever has. We too have to put fear aside and have faith in Jesus in order to experience real life! Our pastor today, Mike Breaux, shared some quotes that I loved from Max Lucado's book Fearless.

When fear shapes our lives, safety becomes our god.  When safety becomes out god we worship the risk free life.  Can the safety lover do anything great? Can the risk-averse accomplish noble deeds? For God? For others?  No. The fear-filled cannot love deeply.  Love is risky. The fear-filled the cannot give to the poor. Benevolence has no guarantee of return… the worship of safety emasculates greatness. No wonder Jesus wages such a war against fear.”

“Fear never wrote a symphony or poem, negotiated a peace treaty, or cured a disease. Fear never pulled a family out of poverty or a country out of bigotry.  Fear never saved a marriage or a business.  Courage did that.  Faith did that. People who refused to consult or cower to their timidities did that.  But fear itself?  Fear herds us into a prison and slams the doors.  Wouldn’t it be great to walk out?”

"When Christ is great, our fears are not. As awe of Jesus expands, fears of life diminish. A big God translates into big courage.”

We sang this song at the end of the service. It really speaks to all the things the sermon was about. I love it!

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
Your perfect love is casting out fear
And even when I'm caught in the middle of the storms of this life
I won't turn back
I know you are near

And I will fear no evil
For my God is with me
And if my God is with me
Whom then shall I fear?
Whom then shall I fear?

Oh no, You never let go
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, You never let go
In every high and every low
Oh no, You never let go
Lord, You never let go of me

And I can see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on
A glorious light beyond all compare
And there will be an end to these troubles
But until that day comes
We'll live to know You here on the earth

Yes, I can see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on
And there will be an end to these troubles
But until that day comes
Still I will praise You, still I will praise You

Today's message really got me thinking about what I am afraid of, besides spiders and snakes :). What fears am I holding on to that keep me from living the life God wants me to live? Fears of failure, rejection, sacrifice... I am not sure. I do know I want to live a good story, one of faith not fear.
